NYC cannibal case tests lines of fantasy, threat

(AP) ? In Internet chats as breezy as they were bizarre, a police officer accused of plotting to kidnap and eat as many as 100 women was once cautioned not to be wasteful when cooking a victim because "there is nearly 75 pounds of food there."

But no one was ever actually harmed in Gilberto Valle's alleged plot, let alone eaten. And a defense attorney says the officer was merely engaging in harmless Internet fantasy.

Where exactly the line is drawn between bizarre talk and a true plot has emerged as the key question in a case that has shocked even the most jaded New Yorkers.

Indeed, experts say many people have a compulsion to create horrific scenarios about cannibalism, and that the Internet allows them to indulge in their dark side anonymously and ? usually ? safely.

"There is a big difference between discussing, and even fantasizing about this type of activity and actually carrying it out," said Jeffrey Parsons, a psychologist at Hunter College. "Not all the people who fantasize about it will go on to carry it out."

One website called "Devoured" ? devoted to a fetish called "vore"? is almost comical in its approach, saying it's "where everyone's on the menu."

The site defines "vore" as a sexual interest that "occurs from the idea of being eaten whole and alive, eating another alive, or watching this process."

A chat room named "Yum Chat" spells out strict rules for participation: "In-character taunting between predator and prey that's all in good fun as part a role play is just fine, but player to player attacks" aren't allowed.

The online banter attributed to Valle is not characteristic of a sexual disorder, but more indicative of some type of psychotic behavior or a personality disorder, Parsons said.

"Certainly, there are people who are going to sort of address a disorder or problem by letting it out, by venting," he said. "They think, 'If I can express, let it out in an email, or a chat, that's satisfying enough, I don't have to go out and engage in that behavior.'"

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly declined to comment Friday on a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Manhattan that read like "Silence Of The Lambs" and earned Valle instant tabloid infamy.

The Daily News dubbed him "Finest Young Cannibal." The New York Post blared "Cook 'em Danno."

There also were reports of an odd disconnect between the horrendous allegations and Valle's softer side on social media.

In his profile on a dating site, he wrote that he considers himself "a true gentleman, and chivalry is huge with me. ... I'm on here simply because I haven't been able to find a girl who I want to spend some of my free time with."

Valle is a six-year NYPD veteran, a college grad and father of an infant child.

At a bail hearing on Thursday, defense attorney Julia Gatto argued that he never posed a threat. Charges of kidnapping with the intent to murder are overblown, she said.

Her client "at worst is someone who has sexual fantasies about people he knows and he talks about it on the Internet, but not act on it," she said. "Nothing has happened. We may be offended. ... But it's just talk, your honor."

But prosecutors won the argument to jail Valle by claiming his fantasies had morphed into a very real threat.

At the time of his arrest, Valle was on the verge of "kidnapping a woman, cooking her and actually eating her," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Hadassa Waxman.

The government cited evidence that Valle compiled a dossier on women he knew ? and hoped to turn into meals.

"How big is your oven?" an unidentified co-conspirator asked in a July chat about one alleged target.

"Big enough to fit one these girls if I folded their legs," Valle responded, according to the complaint.

Prosecutors accused Valle of running names of women on a police computers without permission to get more information on them, and of following two of them, once while on-duty. He also made a cellphone call from near the home of one woman, authorities said.

Some of Valle's alleged conduct raises red flags, Parsons said.

"This is somebody using a database to target potential victims," he said. "That means it's more serious."

News of The Week: Social Inequality, Doping, and Medical Sociology

by CrimCast

This is our latest installment of Dr. Demetra M. Pappas? ?News of the Week? in which she uses short topics as a teaching tool to stimulate conversation in her sociology, anthropology, criminology and legal studies course.

  1. SOCIAL INEQUALITY/THE GREAT DEBATE (OR WAS IT?)/SOCIAL INTERACTION/DEBATE ETIQUETTE/?GENDERED? CONDUCT (OR NOT)? On October 15, President Obama (who showed signs of coming out of the coma he was in during debate #1) and Mitt Romney had their second Presidential debate. They spent a lot of time on taxes, single mothers, student loans ? in other words things that relate to social inequality and social stratification.? In addition, they engaged in a town hall format (questions from the audience), in which they variously were confrontational (with each other ? though some thought they were confrontational and rude to moderator Candy Crowley of CNN, raiding gendered issues and manners issues generally), ?invaded each others space,? engaged in pointing (which is considered unacceptable in language and non-verbal symbolic communication in American society).? What did you think of the debate (please only take this option if you watched the debated in its entirety of 90 minutes or if you saw ?significant? outtakes of substantial amounts of time)?
  2. DEVIANCE (OR NOT)/ILLEGAL ?DOPING?/TEAM SPORTS/CULTURE/MEDIA. On Thursday of last week, The New York Times had a front-page article, Details of Doping Scheme Paint Armstrong as Leader,? by Juliet Macur, about (stripped) Tour de France winner and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong ?forcing? by intimidation and other means his teammates to ?dope? (take steroids and performance enhancing drugs).? On October 17, 2012, Armstrong stepped down as head of his Livestrong Foundation,? (which has as its mission to unite, inspire and empower those affected by cancer, according to its web paee) ?saying that the media attention to his alleged doping (actually proven with multiple teammates testifying, blood work, etc ? see the NYT piece) that he continues to deny is nonetheless drawing attention from his foundation work. In addition, according to the?October 17, 2012?article by Michael O?Keeffe,?Nike has ended its sponsorship relationship with Armstrong, for reasons relating to the ?mounting evidence.?? Doping is apparently very common in sports ? so much so, that it may be viewed as an ?illegal? subculture, rather than a counterculture (which is more likely to be illegal).? Compare this to last week?s news piece where a school suspended students for drinking supercaffeinated beverages ? are they the same or different, and why or why not?
  3. MEDICAL SOCIOLOGY/FAMILIES/SOCIAL INEQUALITY:? As of October 17, 2012, the town of San Rafael is banning smoking INDOORS in two and three family homes. Is this reasonable regulation or unreasonable imposition on lower income families (high income families usually have a McMansion)?

For more information on Dr. Pappas? pedagogical approach, see her article, ?Creating an Antidote to Student Apathy: The News of the Week,? in?Teacher Scholar:? The Journal of the State Comprehensive University,?Volume 3, Number 1 pp. 45-51.

special feature: Consolation Prize: The Game Console Is Dead ...

Gaming consoles have never found their very existence more threatened.
Illustration: Simon Lutrin/Wired

In November, Nintendo will release Wii U, the first update to the groundbreaking motion-controlled gaming console that took the industry by storm in 2006. Pundits and developers presume Sony and Microsoft will quickly follow suit with their own updated game consoles ? also the first in years ? though neither have confirmed it.

Assuming all of these new machines arrive as predicted, they?ll hit store shelves at nearly the exact moment when the venerable game console, and the business model that sustained it, became obsolete.

In the history of videogames, devices designed primarily to play games have dominated more versatile machines by offering more software and a significantly better gaming experience.

The last generation of devices has been bigger than any previous one. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo combined have moved over 225 million home game consoles since their launches in 2005 and 2006. That?s a stunning success, especially when you consider the consoles were just a Trojan horse for the real business of selling billions of game titles at a wallet-thinning $40 to $60 a pop.

And that?s not all. In predictions about the race to own the living room, disrupt cable television and remake the entire entertainment industry, consoles often figure near the top of the list. Microsoft crows repeatedly that its Xbox platform, though not its biggest money maker, is probably its greatest success since Windows 95 and Office.

Nearly seven years have elapsed since Xbox got an update ? an eternity in hardware manufacturing. In that time, the $67 billion worldwide game business has shifted radically, forcing far-reaching changes in everything from pricing, game design, distribution, audience expectations and devices.

Anticipating the shifting sands for consoles, Microsoft this week unveiled a slate of new features for Xbox that aim to turn it into a new type of entertainment platform with hooks to mobile devices, cheap gaming apps, video streaming and music ? a move that comes even as it is poised to release the latest sequel in its blockbuster Halo franchise. The dual message couldn?t more clear: Consoles are bigger than ever, and they need to change immediately, or die.

???Consoles, in terms of the way that they???ve been operating and failing to evolve, have to change,??? says Mark Kern, head of the game developer Red 5 Studios. ???The console model is hamstrung by the whole box-model mentality, the idea that you pay $60 for a game and you go play.???

The most obvious disruptor has been mobile apps, which offer pretty good game play on cellphones and tablets for one-tenth or less the price of console games, and very often for free. Other trends include the explosion of social gaming, also mostly free, and the resurgence of PC games, which are now typically cheaper and more flexible than console games, tapping into new online distribution platforms that make them far more convenient to purchase.

None of the game industry insiders Wired interviewed for this story were ready to call the age of the consoles well and truly over. Cinematic graphics, intense play, stories with the narrative sweep and character development of a well-crafted novel: These will keep the fans coming, most argued, in smaller numbers, perhaps, but just as devotedly as ever. At the same time, all of the companies they work for are well underway with plans for radical overhaul, signaling a clear understanding of what is coming ? and more to the point, what has already arrived in the market full force.

The videogame console as we???ve always known it actually died a few years ago. It keeled over somewhere around the time that Microsoft redesigned the Xbox 360???s user interface so you had to tab through ?Bing,? ???Home,??? ???Social??? and ???Video??? before you got to the tab marked ???Games.??? Ever since, the big three makers have been bending over backward to show that their boxes aren???t just dumb game players but connected everything-machines that play more Hulu than Halo.

The pressure to evolve even further has become immense now that the quality gap between cheap-or-free games and full-price ones is narrowing. The best iPad games look like middle-of-the-road Xbox 360 games. Your smartphone is quickly getting to the point where its hardware could display good-looking games in 1080p on your television, and it won???t be long before your phone and TV can sync up without cables.

The result: Years from now, 225 million devices will almost certainly be seen as the point at which the console business peaked. Gamers are going elsewhere for their fix. The console???s time at the top of the heap is drawing to an end, and these machines won???t survive without radical change.

???Everybody who is paying attention is seeing the tectonic plates under the game industry shifting pretty dramatically,??? says David Reid of CCP Games, which is bringing a free-to-play shooter called Dust 514 to Sony???s PlayStation 3. ???The core model is eroding.???

Consoles used to do everything best, but those strengths are now being wiped away. Unlike PC games, which may require finicky custom settings, consoles ???just work,??? fans have long pointed out. Well, so does the iPad. Consoles are cheaper than PCs? Not when you factor in the growing disparity in game prices. Consoles have all the good content? Well, if you want Nintendo- or Sony-exclusive games, you???ll need to buy their hardware. But for many gamers, Angry Birds is becoming more attractive than Mario.

The ripple effects, if you can call a giant tsunami a ripple, are already washing over the game industry. These days, makers of high-end console games need to sell more and more copies, at higher and higher prices, because triple-A game development is getting exponentially more expensive. That?s creating sticker shock for fans, who are increasingly being asked to pay far more than the standard $60 to absorb crippling development costs. Game publishing giant Ubisoft???s plan to squeeze $150 out of its most diehard Assassin???s Creed III players on day one is typical: $120 for a ???limited edition??? game package and $30 for a ???season pass??? of downloadable extra game content, to be drip-fed over the next year.

Gaming aficionados will pay up, they say, because the bigger games are of higher quality. But only a handful of developers can now afford to play in this rarefied and risky space, and even for these few, the returns will be smaller. The new leaders in the game, insiders predict, will be those who can shift resources into less ambitious, higher-return products, leaving the future of high-end games in serious doubt over the long haul.

???In game design,??? says Red 5???s Kern, ???the optimal strategy for any game tends to fall to the player known as the min-maxer. A min-maxer quickly finds the advantageous parts of the game and optimizes by dumping all of their gold, all of their skill points into the things that allow them to win the game. And they put nothing into the other stuff.???

???Game companies can???t have it both ways. They???ve got to min-max.???

Investigators did not immediately release details on the death of the girl's grandmother, 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna. (AP Photo/Upper Merion Township Police Department)

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. (AP) ? Authorities recovered the body of a 10-month-old girl not far from where her grandmother was slain and arrested a family friend who investigators said killed them in a botched ransom kidnapping.

Saanvi Venna's body was found around 4:30 a.m. Friday in the basement of a building in the same Upper Merion Township apartment complex where she lived. Investigators had been searching for her since Monday.

The family friend killed 61-year-old Satyavathi Venna while trying to abduct the girl, whom he planned to hold for ransom, Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said.

"The grandmother died trying to save her granddaughter's life, trying to prevent her from being taken," Ferman said.

Ferman identified the suspect as Raghunandan Yandamuri, 26. He lives in the apartment complex and was acquainted with the family as a member of the Indian community.

Yandamuri was being arraigned Friday afternoon. It wasn't clear if he had an attorney.

Ten copies of a ransom note were left in the apartment. It demanded $50,000 in exchange for the girl's safe return, Ferman said.

"It was clear it was crafted by someone who knew the family nicknames," Ferman said.

Yandamuri led investigators to the girl's body, according to Ferman. He told investigators he stuffed a handkerchief into the girl's mouth and wrapped a towel around her head before putting her in a suitcase as part of the kidnapping, she said.

An autopsy was being conducted on the girl. Ferman said her body had been found under a bench in a sauna or bathroom area.

Upper Merion Township police say the girl's father and mother moved to the U.S. from India in February 2007 and into the apartment in June.

Ferman said there was no indication Yandamuri knew the family before they arrived in the area. He had participated in a candlelight vigil held for the missing girl and distributed fliers about her, Ferman said.

The grandmother had been visiting from India since July and was scheduled to return home in January. She died of cuts to her neck and chest, a coroner said.

Sikorsky to Build Superfast, Military-Grade Helo

In 2009 Sikorsky Aircraft built the world?s fastest helicopter, the X2, which clocked in at nearly 287 miles per hour and earned a PM Breakthrough Award to boot. Since then, the company has been incorporating the technology into designs for a new helo?the Raider S-97?which it plans to offer it to the U.S. Army in 2015.

Like the X2 Demonstrator, the S-97 will use a coaxial rotor system. Its two rotors spin in opposite directions to stabilize the helicopter at high speeds, allowing it travel twice as fast as conventional helos. The S-97 will be twice as large as the X2, weighing in at 11,000 pounds, and capable of climbing up to 10,000 feet.

Sikorsky spokesperson Frans Jurgens told PM the S-97 would be able to hover with its nose pointed high or low without sliding backward or forward. "So it will have the ability to pirouette while keeping guns on-target," Jurgens says. "These are the kinds of maneuvers that only the X2 aircraft can achieve." The company plans to build the first two S-97 prototypes next summer and expects to get them off the ground beginning in late 2014.

Sivorsky has proposed the S-97 as a replacement for the Army?s aging fleet of OH-58 Kiowa Warriors. But the company will have its share of competition, and those competitors have already built their aircraft, while Sikorsky?s S-97 remains a design. Still, Jurgens is confident, arguing that none of the rivals build anything as revolutionary as the S-97. "With X2 technology, you can go twice as fast and twice as high," Jurgens says. "Current scouts can fly over only 40 percent of Afghanistan, because the land is so mountainous. The X2 can cover 97 percent."

In December the Army will decide whether to upgrade the existing Kiowa fleet or to launch an Armed Aerial Scout competition to find a replacement.

Negotiate your neighbourhood with group buying schemes-II ...

By: Ravi Sinha

india realty news, india real estate news, real estate news india, realty news india, india property news, property news india, india news, property news, real estate news, India PropertyTrack2Realty Exclusive:?The way group buying in real estate works is simple. Take GrOffr.com for instance. This is an online and offline integrated platform which showcases property. ?It uses social media networks to let buyers know about possible good deals, and leaving it to them to do some viral marketing. Once a large group of buyers is thus formed, the group buying site then introduces it to the network of dealers and developers and helps?negotiate?a suitable discount.

Since, the developer doesn?t have to pay for the marketing, they are willing to pay such companies a transaction fee which is a percentage of the total value of the deal. For the buyers, it offers the best rates at no fee, thus making it a win-win proposition for all involved.

The developers also benefit by getting substantial cash flow,?giving them a good amount of working capital. ?In today?s real estate scenario, bulk buying could be the answer to the market slump and the long awaited cash flow. Sometimes, the discount size is not to be sneered at. Discounts on group buying vary from 5-30 per cent, the average divergence from market rate being 25-30 per cent,? says a property analyst.

The buyers can suggest a deal in ?Start?Your?Group? section. After starting a deal of their own choice, they can combine like-minded people to form a group. On forming a group, GrOffr?s team steps in and negotiates the best deal with the developers on the buyers? behalf. Also, new developments in the real estate sector are mentioned in the blog of such group buying sites, as and when they arrive.

Interestingly, many of such online group buying platforms doesn?t charge any membership or brokerage fees, and it also guarantees assured gifts?ranging from a sandwich toaster to an iPad-on each home purchase. If this is not enough, they also shell out a part of the profit if a person introduced by you purchases the property.

(AP) ? It had all the makings of an Olympic event: an indoor arena, play-by-play announcers, 7,000 enthusiastic fans, uniformed competitors from across the globe and swarms of cameras capturing every angle of the action. However, when the crowd erupted into a screaming frenzy each time a player met his demise, it felt much more like "The Hunger Games."

The dizzying world championships of the online battle arena game "League of Legends" concluded Saturday night inside the University of Southern California's Galen Center, which typically hosts basketball ? not video ? games, with underdog Taiwan's Taipei Assassins defeating South Korea's Azubu Frost to win the tournament's $1 million grand prize.

Taipei Assassins members Chen "MiSTakE" Hui Chung, Kurtis "Toyz" Lau, Alex "Lilballz" Sung, Cheng Bo "Bebeisadog" Wei and Wang June "Stanley" Tsan bested Azubu Frost members Jung "RapidStar" Min-sung, Lee "CloudTemplar" Hyun-woo, Hong "MadLife" Min-gi, Jang "Woong" Gun-woong and Park "Shy" Sang-myeon in three of four championship rounds.

The contest served as the latest example of the increasing popularity of competitive gaming ? or e-sports, as it's called. Unlike most multi-game e-sports competitions, such as the World Cyber Games and Major League Gaming, the second season world championships of "League of Legends" were organized directly by the game's developer, Riot Games Inc.

Brandon Beck, the Riot Games CEO who co-founded the studio with president Marc Merrill in 2006, acknowledges that "League of Legends" was always designed to be more like a sport than an interactive film or virtual amusement park. He said because there's no "turnkey solutions" for organizing e-sports, Riot Games decided to hold the contest themselves.

While e-sports have been around for more than 15 years, the genre has yet to achieve mainstream success in North America, though it's practically a national pastime in South Korea. That's shifted over the past few years, as technology has evolved, Internet speeds have become faster and more reliable and a generation of spectating gamers have grown up.

"If you lump North America and Europe together, e-sports are dramatically on the rise," said Beck. "They're starting to catch up, but it's nowhere near as mainstream as they are in some of these other territories. It's not uncommon to have a large, single-digit percentage of the Korean population watching a 'League of Legends' final on TV."

Each match of "League of Legends" features two teams of five players picking superhero-like characters with special powers called Champions from a list of more than 100, then attempting to slaughter each other and destroy their jungle arena bases. Riot Games mostly makes money with the free-to-play game by selling virtual items and characters.

The studio recently declared "League of Legends" as the "most played game in the world" with 70 million players hailing from 145 countries registering for the game since it debuted in 2009. Riot Games noted an average of 12 million players are now logging on each day, more than "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," ''World of Warcraft" or any Facebook game.

It's a massive reach when compared to other games ? free or otherwise. "FarmVille 2," the current most popular game on Facebook, has 8.5 million daily users. The online role-playing saga "World of Warcraft" has 10 million subscribers. "Modern Warfare 3," the successful first-person shooter for game consoles, hit its peak at 3.3 million daily players.

"We were newbs at the starting-a-studio thing," said Beck. "As you might imagine, we dramatically underestimated a lot of the execution challenges along the way. We founded it out of a lifelong passion for competitive games. We made countless mistakes along this journey, so many in fact, we incorporated the idea of making mistakes into our culture."

The mostly young male crowd inside the Galen Center was clearly rooting for the Taipei Assassins, showering them with repeated "T! P! A!" chants and standing ovations each time the group took down Azubu Frost, who found themselves mired in controversy last week after they were accused of peeking at overhead displays to gain an advantage during the playoffs.

"We never fancied ourselves as league commissioners," said Beck, who graduated from USC with Merrill. "I don't think it was on anyone's Top 50 list of things they wanna do, but as you probably saw this past weekend, we've already had to make some very challenging decisions. We get it. We're creating a professional sport. It's part of our job."

Riot Games fined the team $30,000, about 20 percent of their semifinal winnings. It wasn't the only glitch at the playoffs, which were also bogged down in connectivity issues that forced some of the remaining matches to be moved from the LA Live entertainment complex in downtown Los Angeles to Riot Games' offices in Santa Monica, Calif.

Dustin Beck, Riot Games' head of e-sports, said the developers toiled away after the playoff fiasco to create a platform for the world championships that would remain live even if the Internet went down in the Galen Center. It worked, and the teams competed behind curtains, outside the view of the monitors that broadcast their positions to the audience.

Saturday's world championships went off without any issues, both in person and online where they were live streamed. While e-sports have been broadcast on U.S. television in the past, it never caught on. Organizers have forgone the old-school medium in favor of streaming matches online, where they can sell their own advertising and charge subscription fees.

"We lose a lot of money on e-sports," said Merrill. "It's not something, currently, that we do to drive return or profitability or whatnot. It's bringing value to our players. Maybe, down the road, that will change. This is something that we believe, as a company, philosophically, if we bring value to our players, they'll reward us with engagement."

Other gamemakers seem to be taking notice. "Call of Duty" publisher Activision Blizzard Inc. recently announced new features, such a picture-in-picture mode, for the upcoming "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2" that would make it friendlier to e-sports, and Microsoft Corp. is making "Halo 4" available at a Major League Gaming competition prior to its Nov. 6 launch.

Nature recycles all organic matter through a process called composting, which is beneficial to both nature and us. Learn what it is, its benefits, and how to do it. It helps you grow healthier plants ? Soil cannot be healthy if it lacks in organic matter. To grow, plants need a soil that is healthy and full of nutrients. Adding organic matter to soil is the most effective way to make it healthy and to ensure that seeds sown in it grow to their full potential. The organic matter that compost contains allows soil to retain water and nutrients better. This, in turn, ensures that plants grown in it are rich in nutrients. The ultimate beneficiaries of composting, in fact, are not the plants, but us. Eating healthy and nutrient-rich plants augurs well for our own health.
