Humans kill nearly 100 million sharks each year, say conservationists

Shark populations have declined rapidly, driven largely by demand for shark fins, a delicacy in many Asian countries.

Protection measures have failed to stop around 100 million sharks being fished every year and a third of all shark species are now threatened with extinction, conservationists say.

Many are caught for their fins, a delicacy in Asian soup. The fins are sliced off and the animals are often dumped alive overboard to die of suffocation or eaten by other predators.

Protection for endangered sharks may have lagged because they are relatively unloved compared to animals such as pandas or lions, even though they usually kill fewer than 10 people a year worldwide.

An estimated 97 million sharks, or 1.41 million tonnes, were caught in 2010 compared to 100 million in 2000, according to a study in the journal Marine Policy, the first to estimate the number of sharks killed annually.

"We are now the predators. Humans have mounted an unrelenting assault on sharks and their numbers are crashing throughout the world's oceans," said Elizabeth Wilson, manager of global shark conservation at The Pew Charitable Trusts.

A meeting of 170 nations in Bangkok from March 3 to 14 will consider limits on trade in hammerhead sharks, oceanic whitetip sharks and porbeagle sharks to curb over-fishing. Great white sharks, whale sharks and basking sharks already have protection.

"More has to be done. Some species are really hanging on by a thread," said Boris Worm, a marine biologist at Dalhousie University in Canada, who was lead author of the study with other experts in Canada and the United States.

Demand in Asia for shark fins, a delicacy in soup, is a main driver of catches that also target meat, liver oil and cartilage.

The small fall in catches from 2000 to 2010 may be an encouraging sign of steps to outlaw finning by the United States, Canada, Europe and Australia in the past decade, Worm said. And China plans to phase out shark fin soup in official banquets.

But it may be a sign that sharks are getting harder to find because there are fewer in the oceans, he told Reuters.

Unloved fish

Sharks killed seven people worldwide in unprovoked attacks in 2012, down from 13 in 2011 but above the average for 2001 to 2010 of 4.4, according to the International Shark Attack File compiled by the University of Florida.

On Wednesday, a New Zealand man was attacked and killed by a great white shark.

Friday's study estimated that between 6.4 and 7.9 percent of the world's sharks are caught every year, depleting numbers since sharks grow slowly, have few offspring and numbers can only rebound at about 4.9 percent a year.

Pew urged delegates at the Bangkok meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species to agree more protection for sharks and rays.

Worldwide there are about 500 species of shark, ranging from the dwarf shark that can fit in the palm of a hand to the whale shark, the largest fish in the oceans that can grow up to 12 metres (40 feet), the length of a bus.

A third of those species risk being wiped out, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

(AP) ? The U.S. team played the Chicago White Sox to a draw on Tuesday.

The afternoon probably felt like a loss.

In its first of two exhibition games before the World Baseball Classic, manager Joe Torre's team fell into a four-run hole through five innings, and needed three RBIs by Giancarlo Stanton and a run-scoring triple by David Wright to forge a 4-4 tie in a game called after nine innings.

But the game itself proved to be almost secondary to what happened before it, when Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira strained his right forearm and had to pull out of the tournament.

"He had gone into the cage to hit off the tee. I think he took about three or four, just light swings as he was starting to get loose," Torre said afterward. "It was just a freak thing."

X-rays were negative, and Teixeira was headed back to New York City, where the Yankees said he will be evaluated Wednesday by team Dr. Christopher Ahmad and Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser.

His loss leaves the U.S. team scrambling for another first baseman, and Torre said he wasn't sure whether a replacement will be on hand for an exhibition game Wednesday against Colorado.

The U.S. opens the Pool D play Friday night against Mexico.

"We're just taking names," Torre said. "But again, Tex was a switch hitter, which was ideal for us, and left-handed wise, we have a couple switch hitters and (Joe) Mauer. Otherwise, we're pretty lopsided right-handed. So we're going to have to see what's the best bet for us."

Paul Konerko may have made a strong case for consideration, going 3 for 3 and driving in a run for the White Sox. Gordon Beckham also went 3 for 3 with an RBI.

The Rangers' Derek Holland, who will start for the U.S. on Sunday against Canada, allowed a run on four hits in three innings. He struck out three without issuing a walk.

"Felt good. Felt real good," Holland said. "First time working with Mauer was a little different. I'm used to working with our guys. ... They got a couple hits here and there, but overall, I think it was a good job."

The Padres' Luke Gregerson relieved Holland and gave up another run in the fourth, and Royals left-hander Tim Collins ran into even more trouble in the fifth.

He allowed lead-off singles to Dwayne Wise and Ramirez, and then watched his team flub a run down between first and second base to leave runners on the corners.

Connor Gillaspie hit a long fly ball that left fielder that Shane Victorino couldn't catch over his shoulder at the warning track, and it bounced over the wall for a run-scoring ground-rule double. Konerko followed with a base hit that gave the White Sox a 4-0 lead.

The Americans finally answered in the sixth, when Wright hit his run-scoring triple and Stanton added a sacrifice fly. They then pulled even in the eighth on two-out singles by Ryan Braun and J.P. Arencibia and a two-run double by Stanton, the Marlins' All-Star outfielder.

Braun wound up 3 for 4 and scored two runs.

Right-hander Gavin Floyd got the start for Chicago and allowed two hits and a walk in 2 2-3 scoreless innings, and said it was an honor to face the American team.

"They have a great lineup. All these teams should have great lineups," Floyd said. "Ultimately, you try not to think about that. To be thrown in the mix that early, I kind of liked that. I like the challenge. You just try to ignore it."

NOTES: Torre firmed up his starters for Pool D play on Tuesday. R.A. Dickey will pitch the opener against Mexico and Ryan Vogelsong will pitch Saturday against Italy, followed by Holland on Sunday. ... Ben Zobrist started at 1B for the U.S. in place of Teixeira before moving to 3B and RF later in the game. ... RHP Matt Lindstrom and LHP Scott Snodgress each allowed two runs for Chicago.

Donald Trump to address conservative conference

Donald Trump (Getty Images)

Television personality and real estate mogul Donald Trump will be a featured speaker at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) next week, the largest annual gathering of conservatives in the country.

?Donald Trump is an American patriot and success story with a massive following among small government conservatives,? American Conservative Union Chairman Al Cardenas said in a Tuesday press release announcing Trump's involvement. ?I look forward to welcoming him back to the CPAC stage next week. Mr. Trump?s previous CPAC appearance was hugely popular among our attendees and we expect it will be even more popular this year.?

The ACU's decision to bring Trump back to the annual conference?he also spoke in 2011?comes after the group said it would not invite New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, one of the nation's most popular Republican governors, according to public opinion polls.

Trump endorsed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for president and appeared publicly with him in 2012.

Sony aims for third place in global smartphone market

RIO DE JANEIRO, March 5 (Reuters) - Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari stood up for specialist dribbler Neymar on Tuesday, saying the flamboyant forward's reputation for falling down easily was undeserved and exaggerated. "He gets fouled 10 times a match, and possibly one or two of those free kicks shouldn't be awarded, but then that is normal in football," Scolari told a news conference on Tuesday. "The coaches who criticise Neymar, who claim he falls over or simulates fouls, do that because it's an easy way out for them. ...

Apps Are Important

03-bad-apps-videoI had a little bit of time to play with the Chromebook Pixel today and I'm a regular user of the Acer C7, a $199 machine that is wildly underpowered but good enough on a bad day. I really like the concept and I really like ChromeOS - it's a solid way to get a little browsing done, say, in a cyber cafe or hotel bar. It isn't, however, an OS.

Full speed (almost) ahead: Broadband network to launch in Lexington

By Mickey Gorman

Rockbridge County?s new fiber optic broadband network will eventually allow residents like Charles Bodie to access high-speed Internet connections from the comfort of their own homes.

Bodie, who lives in Kerrs Creek, said he drives at least 15 minutes to use the Internet at Leyburn Library in Lexington because the connection at his house is so poor.

?We have what is called dial-up, which is by the phone line, and when you use the Internet that way you have a long wait,? Bodie said. ?There is a long delay of 30 minutes or more.

Bodie said he is excited for the arrival of a faster Internet connection, though he may have to wait a little longer.

The newly installed network will be tested in Lexington this week before going live in the city at the end of March. But parts of Rockbridge County will have to wait up to two years before having access to the network?s high-speed communication services.

The Rockbridge Area Network Authority (RANA), a group of leaders from Rockbridge County, Lexington and Buena Vista cities, and Washington and Lee University, formed in 2009 after receiving a federal grant to bring high speed Internet to the county.

RANA?s board of directors is hopeful that ?a major portion? of Lexington will be ready to connect in March, said Dan Grim, the board secretary.

Grim said it was impossible to say exactly how much of Lexington?s fiber optic line will be ready following the tests.

Though early predictions pinned the project?s completion at the end of March, he said, installation setbacks pushed the deadline back.

Only portions of Lexington will have an operating fiber optic system by the end of next month. Fiber network construction should be completed in May, according to the RANA website.

Connecting to Fiber Optic in Lexington

After Lexington?s network is tested this week, ?city residents will have to wait for RANA to strike a deal with an Internet service provider before accessing the fiber optic line.

RANA will physically connect businesses and homes to the fiber optic line through in-ground installations. Private companies will provide the Internet and communication services.

Many of these companies are withholding their bids to provide services until the line is tested and running, said Hunt Riegel, RANA?s Rockbridge County representative.

Riegel said RANA board members feel that they are close to finalizing a deal with one local Internet service provider, Rockbridge Global Village.

?We are basically agreed in principal,? said Dusan Janjic, the President of Rockbridge Global Village. He said the lawyers are still working out the wording of the contract, but should be finished around April.

RANA plans to install as much of the fiber optic network as it can before the project?s $7 million federal stimulus grant runs out in July.

Plans for northern parts of the county

Parts of northern Rockbridge County will be excluded from the project until there are funds available to extend the network, Riegel said.

RANA plans to use revenue from operating the fiber optic network to fund these final stages of installation, he said.

Once the fiber optic network is up and running, Internet service providers will sign contracts with RANA to connect residents to the fiber optic line. RANA will receive a portion of the money from residents? Internet bill payments, which will be used to fund the remaining installations.

Riegel said he expects RANA to make a profit by December and have money to connect the rest of the county within two years.

?It is what it is,? said Buffalo district supervisor John Higgins during the Rockbridge County board meeting on February 25. ?I hope they can eventually get [fiber optic] service out to the county where they need it.?

The northern parts of the county will not be without ?high-speed Internet? until then. County residents will have access to Digital Subscriber Line, or DSL, cabinets that were installed in addition to fiber optic lines, Grim said.

The DSL cabinets were attached to telephone poles where the ground installation of the fiber optic line ran into trouble, he said.

DSL versus fiber optic broadband

DSL services carry the Internet signal to users through a copper wire, typically in the form of a phone line, while a fiber optic line is run through a glass filament installed in the ground.

A DSL line carries a limited amount of data because of its narrow bandwidth, or cable size, relative to a fiber optic line.

A fiber optic cable operating at full capacity will be two thousand times faster than a DSL cable operating at full capacity, Riegel said.

Most homes and businesses in Rockbridge County will never come close to transferring enough data to push the fiber optic network to its full capacity, he said.

Homeowners and business owners can expect service that is ?six or seven times faster? than what they?re used to with the fiber optic network, Riegel said.
