Speedskater Bridie Farrell competes in the 1000-meter race at the Long Track American Cup Final North American Championship Friday, March 1, 2013, in Kearns, Utah. U.S. Speedskating began an investigation Friday into the report of a female skater accusing former Olympian and organization president Andy Gabel of sexual abuse in the 1990s. Farrell told public radio station WUWM in Milwaukee that she had sexual contact with Gabel repeatedly over several months in 1997 and 1998 while both were training in New York and Michigan. When the alleged abuse began, she was 15 and Gabel was 33.(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer)

A second former speedskater came forward Friday with allegations against Andy Gabel, telling The Associated Press she was raped at age 15 by the one-time leader of the U.S. short track program, then manipulated into an illicit three-year relationship that ended at the 1994 Lillehammer Olympics.

Nikki Meyer, who was known by her maiden name of Nikki Ziegelmeyer when she won short track relay medals for the U.S. at the Albertville and Lillehammer Games, delivered the most recent accusations against Gabel, a medalist himself who competed in four Olympics, was a former president of U.S. Speedskating and, until last week, held a prominent position at the International Skating Union.

"He wasn't a hero. He wasn't the god of speedskating," Meyer, now 37, told the AP in an hour-long telephone interview from her hometown in suburban St. Louis. "He's a child molester. He's a rapist. He's a sexual abuser. He's a pedophile. By no means should anybody think he is anything more than that."

Gabel, now 48, issued a statement to the AP acknowledging he made mistakes during his skating career, but strongly denied forcing himself on anyone.

"I want to emphasize there was no incident of any abuse ever," Gabel said. "I never forced myself on any individual, and any allegations of that nature are absolutely false. Any relationship I had was consensual."

He went on to say, "Looking back on it now, I understand that my conduct nearly 20 years ago and longer was still inappropriate. I've apologized publicly for that and I'm sorry for crossing that line. I understand that inappropriateness more than ever now."

Last week, speedskater Bridie Farrell told Milwaukee public radio station WUWM that she had an improper relationship with Gabel during the 1990s, starting when she was also 15 and he was 33.

Gabel said he resigned from the International Skating Union and U.S. Speedskating "because I care about the athletes and the sport that I have given so much of my life to, and I did not want this type of story to have any adverse affects on the athletes, the organizations and the progress of this sport."

Meyer said she came forward after reading about Farrell's allegations and discussing them with other former skaters on social media.

"It was almost like a carbon copy of a chapter in my life," Meyer said. "How he pursued her, how he made her feel special, how he made her keep it a secret."

But Meyer's accusations were far more shocking. She said Gabel raped her shortly after she arrived at the national training center in Marquette, Mich., in the summer of 1991, a few months shy of her 16th birthday. It happened, she said, after she went to Gabel's room seeking advice on how to adjust the bend in her skates.

"He said, 'Make yourself comfortable, I'll be back in a minute,'" Meyer said, her voice quivering. "Not even a minute later, the lights turned off and he came around the corner at me. He pushed me on the bed and jumped on top of me. He proceeded to try to kiss me and pull down my shorts.

"He kept saying, 'I know why you came to my room. I know why you came to my room.' I was trying to get him off of me. I was like, 'No, please stop.' At that point, I was trying to talk him out of what was inevitably happening. His reaction was more disappointment and being aggravated at me. It was like, how could I not be enjoying this? Why am I ruining this sexual experience for him?"

Asked if she was raped, Meyer said, "That word has always sort of freaked me out. But, yes, it was intercourse."

Before she left the room, she said Gabel issued a chilling admonition. "This never happened," he said, according to Meyer. "If you try to tell anybody, they will not believe you."

Meyer said she ran across the hall to tell a couple of fellow skaters, but they replied that she was just homesick and looking for attention. She said she didn't want to tell her parents because she believed they would bring her home from the training center, ruining her Olympic chances.

Meyer said she attempted to stay away from Gabel, but he kept pursuing her.

"Originally, I thought that was his way of trying to apologize to me," she said. "In reality, that was actually his manipulative way of gaining control over me. He was making me feel as though he could have any of us girls. He could be with a grown woman, but he wanted me. He made me feel special, as though he really, really liked me. After being pursued for so long, I guess he broke my spirit. He broke me down where I did believe he really liked me and wanted to be with me."

U.S. Speedskating said it was not aware of Farrell's allegations until she made them to the media. The organization said Friday that, through a referral from the U.S. Olympic Committee's Safe Sport program, it has hired the Chicago-based law firm Sidley Austin LLP to investigate all accusations involving Gabel.

"U.S. Speedskating will not tolerate abuse of any kind and we intend to investigate these claims, and any others that arise, thoroughly," the organization said in a statement.

Gabel was chairman of the ISU's short track technical committee at the time of his resignation from the international governing body. He also stepped down from a panel that oversees the National Speedskating Hall of Fame, of which he is a member.

"Nearly two decades ago, I made personal mistakes and looking back on it now, I wish I had been more mature and made better choices," Gabel told the AP.

Meyer said the relationship with Gabel finally ended at the Lillehammer Olympics, where they both won medals.

"I was 18 by then. I wanted to be more open," she said. "I'm like, 'Who cares what people think? I'm old enough to make my own decisions. You're old enough to make your own decision.' But he wasn't willing to take that step. By then, I had matured enough and it was kind of like a light bulb turned on. I was like, 'Oh, my God, I've wasted the last three years of my life waiting for this opportunity to finally arrive when we could be more open with this. But he used me the last three years because he could.' I was disgusted and mortified and really (ticked) off that he didn't want me to come out with it."

Meyer said she's not sure if she will pursue criminal charges against Gabel, or if she even can because of the possible statute of limitations. But she hopes he receives a lifetime ban from U.S. Speedskating and that he's removed from the Milwaukee-based Hall of Fame.

PFT: Vikings, Dolphins to battle for Mike Wallace

BA-AW079_DirecT_D_20110624194438Getty Images

Like many of you, I first became aware of DirecTV in 1994, when the company provided football fans the opportunity, for the first time ever, to watch every NFL game.? For 18-plus years since then, DirecTV has had the exclusive ability to make every game available.

That could soon be ending.

DirecTV CFO Pat Doyle said at a Wednesday investors conference that, if the price goes up too high when the current NFL Sunday Ticket deal expires after the 2014 season, DirecTV would consider ?striking a non-exclusive deal with the NFL or possibly even dropping the popular package,? writes the Hollywood Reporter, via SportsBusiness Daily.

The fact that there?s no new deal only two seasons away from expiration of the current contract isn?t a good sign, given that the NFL usually extends these things years in advance.? Complicating matters is the fact that the popularity of the RedZone channel, now available via cable, has made the Sunday Ticket package less important to many fans.? Also, the availability of every game on NFL Rewind after the fact reduces the attractiveness of features that previously were exclusive to DirecTV.

Thus, with the money going up and the exclusivity being carved away, it?s no surprise that DirecTV is considering passing on the package.? The question becomes whether the ability to watch all games would instead be sold to a cable provider ? or to multiple cable providers.

Regardless of how it turns out, the fact that there?s no deal less than two years away from the expiration of the current one suggests that change is coming for the way fans purchase the ability to watch any/all Sunday afternoon games.

How Hugo Chavez Trolled The United States on Twitter and TV

Venezuela has lost its strongman. The world has lost one of its most prolific trolls.

Hugo Chavez was more of an annoyance than a threat to U.S. interests. But what an annoyance. While he once thought Twitter was a tool of terrorism, he became convinced it was an asymmetric tool to combat what he called a ?conspiracy? of pro-American opponents. Any social media that rewarded hyperbole was tailor-made for Chavez. On Twitter, his use of exclamation points ? prolifically ? were guaranteed. Comparing enemies to fascists and barbarians? Check. Feigned outrage and grandiose boasts? Chavez was a pro.

In May 2011, the U.S. State Department imposed sanctions against the Venezuelan state-run oil company PDVSA for selling gasoline reformate to Iran, prohibiting Chavez?s cash-cow from receiving U.S. export licenses. Chavez tweeted: ?Sanctions against the homeland of [Simon] Bolivar? Imposed by the gringo imperialist government? Well: Welcome Mr Obama! Do not forget we are the children of Bolivar!? The sanctions proceeded.

A close supporter of Libya?s deceased former dictator Muammar Gadhafi, Chavez responded to the fall of Tripoli like this: ?We must stop the unleashed imperial madness! World, good world, humane world, do not be overwhelmed by the barbarism!? Chavez rushed early to the defense of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad. As the Syrian army used live ammunition against protesters, Chavez took to Twitter to announce: ?I talked a few minutes with the Syrian President, our brother Bashar. Syria is the victim of a fascist attack. God help Syria!!? Assad has killed at least 60,000 Syrians over the past two years.

At home, Twitter was a means of?disseminating?mushy and self-glorifying propaganda videos. He dispensed advice on dealing with ?traitors.? His advice: a ?raging socialist revolutionary offensive!? On accusations about poverty in Venezuela, he replied: ?There is no poverty in Venezuela! Factory capitalism is poverty!? (According to the United Nations in 2010, Venezuela?s poverty rate was 27.8 percent, which in fairness is a huge drop from the 49.4 percent Chavez faced when he came to power.) He also trolled an opposition primary debate: ?The opposition is once again a fool!?

His trolling extended onto the airwaves and into the halls of the United Nations. During a televised speech to the U.N. in 2006, Chavez remarked that the building still smelled of ?sulfur,? by which he meant that nearby ex-U.S. President George W. Bush was the devil.

Chavez?s Sunday variety show ?Alo Presidente? was perhaps his most direct venues for rallying support and trolling Washington. The show could last hours ? basically, until Chavez decided to stop ? and was variously described as an Oprah-style talk program applied to authoritarian politics. Chavez would dress-down government ministers or announce new policies on the fly?or dare the U.S.?to invade Venezuela. ?If one day you ever get the crazy idea of invading Venezuela, I?ll be waiting for you on this savanna,? he once dared Bush, whom he also called a ?donkey? and ?Mr. Danger.?

Chavez?s mouth once nearly started a war. In May 2008, Colombian air force planes bombed a camp belonging to the FARC rebel group across the Ecuadorian border, killing rebel commander Raul Reyes. The next day, on live television, Chavez ordered his stunned defense minister to mobilize troops.??Mr. Defense Minister, move me 10 battalions to the frontier with Colombia immediately, tank battalions,? he said. ?The air force should mobilize.? (PBS? Frontline preserved the moment.)

It?ll be difficult for his successor to top that. Nicolas Maduro, Venezuela?s interim president who is likely to stand for elections within 30 days, said Tuesday: ?In the immense pain of this historic tragedy that has affected our fatherland, we call on all the compatriots to be vigilant for peace, love, respect and tranquility.? Maduro announced the military and police would be deployed to maintain order in Chavez?s immediate absence, while Venezuela announced it?s expelling two U.S. military officials accused of plotting against the government.

The White House didn?t engage in online flame wars with the former Venezuelan potentate. But since Chavez?s death, the U.S. has offered few condolences. A?statement?from President Obama on Tuesday evening reads cold: ?At this challenging time of President Hugo Chavez?s passing, the United States reaffirms its support for the Venezuelan people and its interest in developing a constructive relationship with the Venezuelan government,? the statement read.

Chavez?s successor will have to grapple with internal divisions and an opposition movement that will see an opportunity to take power after 14 years of Chavista rule. Venezuela has lost the one person who needed everything to revolve around him, leaving a power vacuum and an unpredictable succession crisis. It?s an important reminder that at the end of the day, trolling is just narcissism.

Bees get a buzz from flower nectar containing caffeine

Mar. 7, 2013 ? You may need a cup of coffee to kick start the day but it seems honeybees also get their buzz from drinking flower nectar containing caffeine. Publishing in Science, researchers have shown that caffeine improves a honeybee's memory and could help the plant recruit more bees to spread its pollen.

In tests honeybees feeding on a sugar solution containing caffeine, which occurs naturally in the nectar of coffee and citrus flowers, were three times more likely to remember a flower's scent than those feeding on just sugar.

Study leader Dr Geraldine Wright, Reader in Neuroethology at Newcastle University, explained that the effect of caffeine benefits both the honeybee and the plant: "Remembering floral traits is difficult for bees to perform at a fast pace as they fly from flower to flower and we have found that caffeine helps the bee remember where the flowers are.

"In turn, bees that have fed on caffeine-laced nectar are laden with coffee pollen and these bees search for other coffee plants to find more nectar, leading to better pollination.

"So, caffeine in nectar is likely to improve the bee's foraging prowess while providing the plant with a more faithful pollinator."

In the study, researchers found that the nectar of Citrus and Coffea species often contained low doses of caffeine. They included 'robusta' coffee species mainly used to produce freeze-dried coffee and 'arabica' used for espresso and filter coffee. Grapefruit, lemons, pomelo and oranges were also sampled and all contained caffeine.

Co-author Professor Phil Stevenson from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the University of Greenwich's Natural Resources Institute said: "Caffeine is a defence chemical in plants and tastes bitter to many insects including bees so we were surprised to find it in the nectar. However, it occurs at a dose that's too low for the bees to taste but high enough to affect bee behaviour."

The effect of caffeine on the bees' long-term memory was profound with three times as many bees remembering the floral scent 24 hours later and twice as many bees remembering the scent after three days.

Typically, the nectar in the flower of a coffee plant contains almost as much caffeine as a cup of instant coffee. Just as black coffee has a strong bitter taste to us, high concentrations of caffeine are repellent to honeybees.

Dr Wright added: "This work helps us understand the basic mechanisms of how caffeine affects our brains. What we see in bees could explain why people prefer to drink coffee when studying."

Dr Julie Mustard, a contributor to the study from Arizona State University, explains further: "Although human and honeybee brains obviously have lots of differences, when you look at the level of cells, proteins and genes, human and bee brains function very similarly. Thus, we can use the honeybee to investigate how caffeine affects our own brains and behaviours."

This project was funded in part by the Insect Pollinators Initiative which supports projects aimed at researching the causes and consequences of threats to insect pollinators and to inform the development of appropriate mitigation strategies.

Population declines among bees have serious consequences for natural ecosystems and agriculture since bees are essential pollinators for many crops and wild flowering species. If declines are allowed to continue there is a risk to our natural biodiversity and on some crop production.

Professor Stevenson said: "Understanding how bees choose to forage and return to some flowers over others will help inform how landscapes could be better managed. Understanding a honeybee's habits and preferences could help find ways to reinvigorate the species to protect our farming industry and countryside."

Cell phone unlocking will soon be legal again ? count on it | Digital ...

The good folks on Capitol Hill cannot muster the wherewithal to steer us away from fiscal slaughter, but they sure as hell can make unlocking your smartphone legal again.

Brenden Sasso at The Hill reports that a battalion of U.S. lawmakers has thrown itself on the public relations grenade that is the cell phone unlocking ban. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) ? a man who understands the politics of the Web better than virtually anyone in Congress ? announced the first bill to legalize cell phone unlocking early this week. Two more bills are on their way ? one from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and another from Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT).

Reps. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and Jared Polis (D-CO) ? two other Internet superstars ? each pledged support for legislation that legalizes unlocking (but not specific legislation). So has Senate Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which oversees copyright law and will likely be the first to take a crack at one of these bills.

Unlocking alters?a cell phone?s (copyrighted) software to allow it to work on multiple wireless carriers. It lets us jump from one wireless service provider to another with the same device (provided the carriers run the same type of network). And unlocking is particularly useful if you travel overseas, where buying a pre-paid SIM card loaded with a local number is commonplace.

But this fight is not really about unlocking; it?s about what it means to?own something ? even if that something includes a copyrighted piece of debilitating software.

The Obama administration kicked off Washington?s unlocking lovefest on Monday with?a response to a successful ?We the People? petition that called legalized unlocking mere ?common sense? (provided you don?t have a wireless contract, or any ?other obligations?). Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski?also called legal unlocking ?common sense.? Both said Congress should pass legislation to kill the unlocking ban.

Put another way, the current situation is insane. First time offenders potentially face a $500,000 fine and five years in prison ? we?re talking ruined lives here. Repeat offenders might as well just smother themselves ? the penalties are literally doubled. Were unlocking to remain illegal, the courts would eventually decide how to punish offenders. If all goes as I suspect it will, unlocking will be legal within a couple of months, at most.

Why am I so sure Congress will come together on this issue? Because it?s good, easy politics. Unlocking was technically legal for the past six years. So bringing back the previous status quo ? or something close to it ? takes very little political capital, and makes a bunch of voters happy. There?s really no way for supporters of this bill to lose, from a political standpoint. Which is why we?re seeing this sudden outpouring of support from federal lawmakers.?

If Congress?doesn?t?legalize unlocking, well, then they?re even more foolish and dysfunctional than I think.

The unlock effort is bolstered by a grassroots campaign launched today by 27-year-old entrepreneur Sina Khanifar ? the same guy who created the pro-unlocking petition that received more than 114,000 signatures and elicited the invigorating response from the White House ? that seeks to alter section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). As written, S1201 prohibits the circumvention of all ?digital locks? (among other things) ? and outlines the maximum penalties listed above.

?[Amending the DMCA] should be something that can get support from both sides of the aisle,? said Khanifar in a statement. ?Republicans should be happy to see less regulation, and Democrats should be happy about a big win for consumer rights. I?m excited to see where things go from here.?

In addition to wanting to make unlocking legal again, the campaign, housed at FixTheDMCA.org, seeks to permanently legalize jailbreaking of phones and tablets, enable the legal creation of screen-reading software for the blind, and finally make it legal for people to rip their personal DVD collection for use on other electronic devices, like PCs and tablets.

Among these, only ?jailbreaking of cell phones ? but not tablets ? is currently exempted under the DMCA, thanks to the Librarian of Congress, who makes new rules every three years for what otherwise illegal activities are exempted from the DMCA. It was the Librarian, James Hadley Billington, who got us into the whole unlocking mess, after ruling in October that cell phone unlocking would no longer have exemption status.

While it may seem as though Congress and the Fix the DMCA crew ? which includes the Electronic Frontier Foundation, Reddit, Mozilla Foundation, YCombinator, iFixit, and others ? are working toward the same goal, that?s not exactly true. As Alex Fitzpatrick at Mashable reports, Sen. Wyden?s bill, the ?Wireless Device Independence Act of 2013,? only makes it legal to unlock devices that are no longer under contract from a wireless carrier, among other stipulations. Fix the DMCA wants to make it legal to circumvent digital locks, period.

At the moment, cell phone owners may only unlock their devices with permission from their wireless carrier. Most carriers allow temporary unlocking for people who want to use their device during international travel, provided the user has an account in good standing. But still, you have to ask before monkeying with your phone?s digital lock.

On principle, I am with Fix the DMCA on this ? consumers should be able to do whatever they want to the products they buy. Making this the law of the land is the fix Congress should provide. But it won?t; it will take the effortless route by passing legislation that keeps wireless providers from flipping out, while still making it legal to unlock your phone once your contract has expired. Is that a win for consumers? You tell me.
