The International Olympic Committee?s executive board voted earlier this week to remove wrestling for the slate of sports at the 2020 games.
The board voted to remove wrestling in favor of keeping the modern pentathlon, which is made up of fencing, horse riding, swimming, running and shooting. Wrestling runs deep in Olympic tradition, going back to the ancient Greek games and the first modern Olympics, held in 1896.
In an article from ESPN about the vote, it was written that wrestling ranked low in several categories at the most recent Olympics, which might have played a part in the vote. According to ESPN, wrestling sold 113,851 tickets at the London games out of 116,854 available, and had a TV-viewing audience of about 23 million out of a maximum of 58.5 million viewers.
Wrestling isn?t a sure goner from the Olympics, though. The IOC executive board will meet in May to decide on which sport or sports to include at 2020, and they?ll meet again in September to make the final vote. Wrestling is in the running for the final sport in the games against seven others: a combined effort from baseball and softball, karate, squash, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and wushu.
Some reports have said it?s unlikely wrestling will get voted back in so soon after getting voted out, while others have said wrestling?s history dating back to the ancient Greek games will help it. Should wrestling be voted out of the Olympics?
